Description
Since its launch in 2016, the Botanical University Challenge (BUC) has grown from “a fun in person quiz” held at Kew with just five teams into a national celebration of botanical skills, confidence and community. Created by Dr M, John Warren and Paul Ashton in response to declining plant ID skills in higher education, BUC now combines online heats, an in person final, and a two day Student Botany Festival offering careers support, training and networking.
With over 800 participants from 42 different academic institutions since 2016 and consistently outstanding feedback - participants strongly agree that BUC improves botanical knowledge, employability and professional networks - it has become a transformative pathway into ecological and botanical careers. Testimonials highlight its unique sense of belonging: “Botany doesn’t feel like a lonely discipline anymore.”
This webinar, led by Dr M and Dr Alastair Culham, explores BUC’s origins, its proven impact, and its ambitious vision as they prepare for BUC 2026 at the University of Reading in August.
