Penhale Dunes – Grazing Management

Summary

Join the Penhale Dunes Ranger for a walk and talk looking at innovative sand dune management on one of the south west’s largest sand dune systems.

Description

We will explore one of Cornwall’s premier sand dunes systems. Designated a Special Area of Conservation, we’ll have the chance to see site rarities such as Early gentian and shore dock. We’ll see conservation grazing in action with north devon cattle and Exmoor ponies roaming the dunes and even some goats. We’ll also look at the results from the recent Dynamic Dunescapes project, where large machinery helped mobilise the dunes.

Jon Cripps Penhale Dunes Ranger, Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Jon has worked at Penhale for over a decade. Whilst over seeing the site he has seen the expansion of conservation grazing across the dunes. Jon has also delivered Dynamic Dunescapes project objectives, a national dune rejuvenation project funded by EU Life and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
