North East Botany Basics – Silverlink Biodiversity Park

Summary

Join a small group of botanists to casually identify plants and habitats at Silverlink Retail Park, in North Tyneside. The aim of our North East Botany Basics events is to provide an entry point to learn the basics of botany – the guides are still learning too!

Description

Silverlink Retail Park is an urban woodland in between Silverlink Retail Park and Cobalt Business Park that was created in 1996. Despite this, it is one of the most biodiverse urban woodlands in Newcastle & North Tyneside. Weaving paths give you access to various woodland, grassland, and wetland habitats in a compact mosaic.

North East Botany Basics will be an inclusive group that is open to all, and we hope to host a number of field trips to the most biodiverse urban habitats around Newcastle. We will aim to host these where there are good public transport links, to allow access to those without a car.

We will use simple language, and introduce anyone interested to the basics of plant and habitat identification. However, anyone with established plant identification skills is more than welcome to join.

Dan Wales-Hart, Mike Perkins, and Alex Blackburn will lead the North East Botany Basics sessions. All three of us are ecologists, with between 6 and 10 years of experience.

We have all undergone FISC Assessments, and are all continually learning and sharpening our botanical skills.
