This course will provide an introduction to BNG and will cover the following:

  • BNG Good Practice Principals
  • Core aspects of BNG
  • Brief overview of planning requirements relevant to BNG
  • Project team requirements for BNG - who needs to be involved and when
  • Feasibility of BNG designs
  • BNG design deliverables
  • Small Sites Metric and Statutory Biodiversity Metric - Overview; required competencies to complete the metrics; how different roles in the sector can gain the competence to use the metrics; when to use one over the other
  • Small Sites Metric - run through

Prior Knowledge

A prerequisite of attending this training is to have read and be familiar with government guidance on mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain, as a minimum this includes: DLUHC BNG Planning Practice Guidance Local authority guidance Developer step-by-step guidance Land manager step-by-step guidance Statutory biodiversity metric tools and guides It would be of benefit to have watched and listened to the CIEEM’s webinars in January and February 2024 on mandatory BNG with Natural England and Defra, which you can find on CIEEM's YouTube channel.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of BNG Good Practice Principles and how they applies to development projects
  • Gain an understanding of the Statutory Biodiversity Metric and Small Sites Metric and which development projects they apply to
  • Gain an understanding of how to complete the Small Sites Metric tool
