Wetland Habitats

Description

This course will provide an overview of freshwater wetland habitats (excluding running water) including ponds, covering: - indicator/characteristic flora and fauna species; protected species; the environmental value of wetlands for climate change/water quality/flood mitigation; pond creation/management including positive and negative indicators that help inform management techniques; invasive species and other threats; succession stages.

LA ecologists, SNCO/NGO conservation officers, students, ecological consultants, wardens, rangers.

Beginner - Intermediate

Prior Knowledge

A basic knowledge of wetlands including management issues


Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to identify and classify a range of different wetland habitats using UKHab including ponds, marshes, fens, wet grassland.
  • Learn 15+ indicator/characteristic flora and fauna species of wetlands.
  • Awareness of protected species found in wetlands.
  • An understanding of threats to wetland habitats including the impacts of invasive species, succession and climate change.
  • Have an understanding of management issues and legisation for wetland habitats.
