Bats: Exploring the Impact of Development on Bats and Discussing Mitigation Hierarchy

Summary

This course covers impacts on bats of different types of development, exploring different types mitigation and discussing the mitigation hierarchy. This course is appropriate for those with some experience of bat ecology and bat surveys, undertaking professional bat work in the UK and Ireland.

Description

This course will focus on the essential skills needed for ecologists, including an understanding of bat ecology and surveys, to identify and assess the various impacts of different developments on bats. We will also explore and discuss suitable types of mitigation for different bat species, review the mitigation hierarchy (avoid, mitigate, compensate, and enhance) and their appropriate contexts, as well as emphasise the importance of effective communication with clients.

Throughout the course, we will also explore effective communication with clients, a vital aspect of an ecologist's role, to ensure a positive outcome for bats.

The training method will include presentations, case studies, and scenarios, alongside small-group activities.

Ecology graduates and students, developers, planners, ecological consultants, SNCO & NGO staff.

Beginner - Intermediate

Prior Knowledge

NB: Bat Licences in the UK are issued by Natural England, NRW, SNH and NIEA. Two licensed referees are required for any application. As references should be based on the observation of a person's skills over an extended period of time, CIEEM does not provide references. We do however provide a certificate confirming completion of the training which will help in the assessment of your application. This certificate is not an indication of your competency.
