Summary
Join Wildcare for a practical session exploring biodiversity in the built environment, with a focus on Bee Bricks for solitary bees and other integrated habitat features.
Description
As modern buildings become more sealed and efficient, many of the small cracks, cavities and gaps once used by wildlife have disappeared. This presentation explores how integrated habitat features can help restore some of those lost opportunities within the built environment.
Led by Wildcare, this session will discuss Bee Bricks and their role as a permanent, low-maintenance nesting feature for cavity-nesting solitary bees. We’ll look at how the Bee Brick can be built directly into the fabric of a building as a replacement brick or block, as well as how freestanding versions may be used in commercial or landscaped settings.
The session will cover why the Bee Brick was developed, the species it is designed to support, and why solitary bees deserve more attention within biodiversity enhancement plans.
We’ll also look at the development of the Bee Brick, including its research background and collaboration between Falmouth University, the University of Exeter and Plymouth University.
