Mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects

Summary

This webinar looks at the Mandatory BNG for NSIPs and what the new regime means in practice.

Description

With mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) coming into force on 2 November 2026, this webinar will introduce the new regime and what it means for developers and practitioners.

Hear directly from the Defra BNG team as they set out how the NSIP approach builds on the existing Town and Country Planning framework, where it differs for major infrastructure, and what this means in practice.

The session will cover key aspects including the 10% BNG requirement and its baseline, the role of the biodiversity metric, and how the Biodiversity Gain Plan fits into the Development Consent Order (DCO) process. Following this, industry experts will share practical insights on delivery, highlighting the opportunities, challenges, and real-world implications of implementing BNG on complex infrastructure projects. Join us to hear from policy leads and practitioners on this significant policy change for nature, and how major infrastructure can play a meaningful role in nature’s recovery and enhancement.

This webinar will be chaired by:
