Summary
Learn to identify mosses and liverworts using the British Bryological Society’s Field Guide in a relaxed environment.
Description
Identifying bryophytes is an essential skill for many habitat surveyors, including those conducting:
- UKHab surveys of woodland, heaths and mires.
- Habitat condition assessment.
- National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys.
The British Bryological Society’s Field Guide is a fantastic resource, but it can feel a little daunting to begin with.
The morning will be spent in the comfort of the classroom, keying a wide selection of samples with the support of your expert tutor. After lunch, we will explore a local site and see a range of bryophytes in the field. Anatomy, terminology and the key itself will become second nature by the end of the day.
Please let me know if you do not own a copy of the book and I can bring sufficient print-outs.

As someone beginning with very little understanding of bryophytes, the trainer did an excellent job of walking us through from the very basics, to identifying species using a key.
