Introduction to Waxcap Grasslands

Attendees will learn to identify potential Waxcap Grasslands, a much-overlooked habitat which is at risk internationally.
The day will start with a series of workshops and present discussing key criteria in defining a Waxcap grassland, and the fungi species that make them up (CHEGD species).
We will also discuss relative legislation and national & international directives, as well as the standpoints of regularly bodies. We will also have field visits to see local sites with waxcap interest. This will allow us to discuss survey efforts and methods.
Some species identification will take place however this will generally be high-level and will not involve microscopy, which is required for some species.

• 08:45: arrival with teas and coffees
• 09:00 – 10:30: Introduction presentation and overview of habitat parameters and key fungal groups.
• 10:30 – 12:00: Local field visit to view good quality waxcap grassland habitat and discuss key identification features
• 12:15 – 12:45: Lunch (not provided)
• 12:45 – 14:15: Presentation regarding survey methods, habitat monitoring, avoidance measures and mitigations
• 14:15 – 16:00: Second local field visit
• 16:00 – 16:30: Summary and close

Please note: The site visit will involve walking uphill and over rough ground.

Nothing required but an understand of fungi would be beneficial.

• Identify potential waxcap grassland
• Outline the reasons for protecting waxcap grasslands
• Identify key CHEGD fungi species, including key quality indicators
• Design a survey schedule for potential waxcap grassland sites
• Advise clients on potential mitigations and avoidance measures
