Using Virtual Fencing to manage Livestock Grazing for Nature Recovery

Summary

How farmers are using virtual fencing on livestock (cattle & sheep) to manage conservation grazing.

Description

Can virtual fencing technology with livestock be a tool to help habitat management and biodiversity recovery while being a productive and sustainable farmer?

Hywel Morgan farms beef and sheep at Esgairllaethdy in the small village of Myddfai, at the western end of Bannau Brycheiniog, in Wales. His farm comprises 230 acres, including 20 acres of rented land, 50 acres of conservation grazing, plus grazing rights on the adjoining common land known as Mynydd Du. There is also 25 acres of native woodland.

In this talk he explores how the use of no-fence collars on livestock can contribute to better outcomes for nature recovery.

Hywel is a 10th generation farmer, operating an organic system for the last three years. He is Chair of the Nature Friendly Farming Network Cymru and an Agricultural Advisor with Plantlife Cymru.
