Description

This presentation covers five technical lighting design techniques that help to reduce the impact artificial lighting has on bats (and other wildlife). Specifically, these are colour temperature, beam angle (& optics), luminaire positioning, lighting controls, and light source (focusing on colour rendering index). The presentation discusses why these are important to consider for the purposes of ecology and includes information on the current Guidance Note 8/23. A selection of example fittings are discussed, as well as how to read lighting design calculations (and what to request to ensure the results are reliable!). It is a session designed to empower ecologists to interrogate lighting designers (when required!).

About the presenter

Jennifer has sixteen years industry experience as a lighting designer and a lifetime of love for the outdoors. She has a master’s degree in Light and Lighting, is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers and the southwest representative for the Society of Light and Lighting. She also teaches lighting design on the architecture and interior design degree courses at Bristol, Falmouth and Plymouth Universities.
