A one-day course on now to produce good quality Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) reports, following CIEEM’s ‘Guidelines for Ecological Report Writing’ (part of the Technical Guidance Series). The course will include workshops, group discussions, case studies and powerpoint presentations, focusing on the following topics:
• Challenges faced in producing ecological reports
• Generic guidance on EcIA report structure and content (including Environmental (Impact) Statement chapters
• Proportionality and ‘fit for purpose’
• Avoiding common pitfalls
Note: the focus of the course will be on ‘Ecological Impact Assessment’ reports. Guidance on writing ‘Species and Habitat Survey Reports’ and ‘Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs)’ is covered by the ‘Ecological Report Writing’ course.

Who Should Attend?

Those writing EcIA reports or ecology chapters of an Environmental Statement (particularly consultants)
Those reviewing these reports written by others (particularly Local authority ecologists and Conservation officers within SNCOs or NGOs).
Participants should have some experience of producing EcIAs and be competent at writing basic ecological reports (or have attended the ‘Ecological Report Writing’ course).

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify poor quality EcIA reports and the subsequent issues and problems that may arise as a result.
  • Apply generic guidance so that structure and content are sufficient to meet the aims and objectives of an EcIA report, either as part of an ES chapter, or as a stand-alone report.
  • Ensure that EcIA reports are proportionate and fit for the intended purpose.
  • Avoid common pitfalls when preparing EcIA reports.
