Designing Biodiversity Net Gain for Bats

Summary

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is development that leaves biodiversity in a measurable better state than beforehand. The Natural England Biodiversity Metric 2.0 is a habitat-based metric to measure BNG, and good practice is to use the metric in combination with ecological information to design BNG based on biodiversity, and not a single number. But what does that combination of ecological+metric decision-making look like, especially for wildlife such as bats?

This webinar presents a new technical note on designing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) for bats, produced by the Bat Conservation Trust. We describe a process for using Core Sustenance Zones and Habitats of Principal Importance to design net gain outcomes for bats, especially to generate long-term outcomes in terms of roost viability and resilience.

Description

The webinar will be presented by the following presenters:

Carol Williams has worked in bat conservation for over 25 years including carrying out research. She has worked for the Bat Conservation Trust for 13 years, most recently as Director of Conservation for over seven years. As part of her role at BCT Carol leads on BNG and the consideration of bats as part of this.

Julia Baker has worked on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects for a variety of infrastructure developments, and is lead author for the UK’s Good Practice Principles on BNG and the recently published practical guide on BNG.

Tom Butterworth is the Technical Director for Natural Capital and Biodiversity leading the work on Biodiversity Net Gain for WSP. Tom supports WSP clients in public and private sectors in meeting their objectives and targets for development together with their objectives for wildlife.

Claire Wansbury is a Fellow of CIEEM. With Atkins colleagues, Claire has been actively engaged with applying Biodiversity Net Gain to projects combined with effective compensation for impacts on key species such as great crested newts and bats.
