Introduction to UK Habitat Classification

This course will enable delegates to plan for and conduct a habitat survey using the UK Habitat Classification.
We consider the range of uses of the UK Habitat Classification, from baseline survey to monitoring and its application in the Statutory Biodiversity Metric. We focus on habitat identification and survey methods, rather than plant identification, but mention the importance of recognising indicator species. The course covers survey planning, mapping techniques and tips for identifying habitats.
Delegates will be introduced to the UK Habitat Classification Field Key and how to map polygon, linear and point features using the protocols developed for UKHab.
The course is suitable for early careers ecologists to advanced level/experienced practitioners wanting confidence to move across to UKHab from other systems. No habitat survey experience is strictly necessary, but an understanding of the purpose of habitat classification, the identification of habitats and standard survey methods; as well as some plant knowledge and identification skills; will be an advantage.

The UK Habitat Classification is seen as a replacement to the Phase One Habitat Survey method as the standard survey method used as part of Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, EcIA and Biodiversity Gain. Many organisations are adopting UKHab for their habitat surveys.

Knowledge of the UK Habitat Classification system is essential for consultants using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric (DEFRA, Feb 2024). This course is a useful component of training for BNG, but does not focus on the use of applications of UKHab for the Statutory Metric.
