Lunchtime Chats with Dr Frances Giaquinto: A Focus on Invasive Fungal Tree Diseases

Summary

Join us as we chat with Dr Frances Giaquinto about invasive fungal tree diseases, their impact on biodiversity and actions to control them.

Description

Although most ecologists and the public are fully familiar with invasive species, there is only limited awareness of invasive alien fungal tree pathogens and the impact these are having on tree planting programmes and the protection and enhancement of biodiversity. This talk explains the current status of invasive tree diseases in Britain and Ireland, describes the problems associated with them, and highlights the actions we can take to control them.

Our speaker is Dr Fran Giaquinto, an ecologist and mycologist who runs an independent ecological consultancy in West Ireland. She has 35 years’ experience of field and laboratory research and currently advises statutory bodies and communities on how they can reduce carbon emissions through actions that protect and enhance biodiversity. She has specialised in invasive species control over the last 12 years, developing methods that require minimum or no herbicide use.
