Summary
Exciting opportunity to hear from eftec (Economics for the Environment Consultancy) Director, Ian Dickie, as he talks about the application of a natural capital approach using examples from the marine environment
Description
This session will focus on the use of monetary valuation in at different scales and decision contexts in the marine environment, and how a natural capital approach supports this. It will describe the natural capital approach and associated methods, such as: asset registers, ecosystem services measurement and monetary valuation approaches. Examples will illustrate the application of these methods to the marine environment at different scales: from case studies of UK estuaries, to marine protected areas and fisheries. The use of valuation links to policy developments and funding options for marine environmental objectives, such as through marine net gain, marine protected areas, and ‘Green freeports
Ian Dickie is an eftec Director. He works on natural capital accounting and investments, and environmental policy. He was editor for BSI’s nature markets principles standard (701, published March 2025), and has led modelling of the Biodiversity Net Gain market and Marine Net Gain policy, as well as economic assessments for multiple UK MPA designations; natural capital investment plans; and economic evidence for investment in natural capital (for the Natural Capital Committee). Ian is a member of Defra’s Biodiversity Expert Committee. He was an author of the Natural Capital Protocol, and the UNDP’s 2016 biodiversity finance guide
