Delivering successful mainstreaming of nature at the science-policy interface

Summary

Join the CIEEM Academia SIG for the May edition of their monthly discussion events. We will be hearing about Delivering successful mainstreaming of nature at the science-policy interface.

Description

My Natural Environment Research Council Knowledge Exchange work on mainstreaming green infrastructure 2017-2021 has exposed significant neglect of nature in the design, delivery and evaluation of statutory and non-statutory planning policies, resulting in reduced quantity and quality of green infrastructure (GI) for people, places and biodiversity . Mainstreaming processes and outcomes were being stifled and their potential was not being realized, despite advances in knowledge, concepts and methodologies for valuing nature.

This talk will identify and assess lessons learned from several case studies in 2024 working with a range of partners mainstreaming nature. In so doing I provide the common ingredients shaping success and highlight actions needed to change the way the value(s) of nature are communicated and captured in policy and practice.

The session will be split into two parts: part1 where I share my results and proposed actions and part 2 where participants can actively contribute not just by asking questions but also sharing their own experiences.

This has involved leading and supporting research on peri urban spaces, urban living and the role of games as participatory tools. He has just completed a Natural Environment Research Council knowledge exchange fellowship on green infrastructure and the planning system. Current work is critically reviewing how rapid evidence reviews can aid select committee inquiries. Alister seeks to work at disciplinary and professional boundaries in both his research, impact and teaching activities.
