Summary
In this joint event with South West Member Network we will take a walk and talk through a complex of floodplain meadows, ranging from ancient species-rich examples to more recently restored fields, led by the Floodplain Meadows Partnership Project Manager and the landowner. Themes discussed will include: the eco-hydrology of the site, keystone flora and associated fauna, soil carbon sequestration, management and restoration techniques.
Description
The event provides an introduction to the ecology and conservation of floodplain meadows, a rare habitat of huge cultural and environmental significance. It will take the form of a walk and talk through a complex of floodplain meadows within the Severn Vale, ranging from ancient species-rich examples to more recently restored fields, led by Emma Rothero, Manager of the Floodplain Meadows Partnership and Debbie Wilkins, the landowner. Themes discussed and illustrated on site will include: the eco-hydrology of the site, keystone flora and associated fauna, soil carbon sequestration, meadow management and restoration techniques.
Emma worked for the Environment Agency for 12 years as a Biodiversity Officer, responsible for advising on flood defence projects, planning applications, securing funds to help deliver local partnership projects, and providing general conservation support to Environment Agency staff.
She took up the role of Floodplain Meadows Partnership Outreach Co-Ordinator in 2008, where she developed the project, and secured funds to keep it going. In 2018, she became the Partnership Manager. She is now responsible for managing this multi partner project, securing funding, advising on direction, delivering project work, developing multi partner projects and managing the team
