Description

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) becomes mandatory in England in January 2024 and represents a step-change for ecology in England’s planning system. The aspiration behind BNG is to ensure that new developments, with few exceptions, plan and deliver at least a 10 % net gain for biodiversity over and above effective implementation of the mitigation hierarchy to ensure no net loss. The ecology and environmental management sector has worked hard to prepare for mandatory BNG and following publication of the statutory metric and associated guidance, the focus must now shift to effective implementation to realise the benefits to nature and society.

Many developers have for some time designed net gain into their projects, and national planning policy frameworks already encourage a net gain approach. This conference will explore some of the lessons learned from early implementation of BNG with particular emphasis on delivery post-planning approval, habitat creation, management and monitoring.
