Bird Identification through Sonograms, the basic principles

This workshop will be based around a bird identification key developed by Paul Howden-Leach and Carlos Abrahams. The key is to be part of a new book to be released in 2022 and the main aim of identification will be through the analysis of sonograms, and will focus on the principles of identification through specific parameters which are applicable in bird call identification. Kaleidoscope software will be used so attendees can play along with the session and a full training licence will be provided.

This session will be hosted by Paul Howden-Leach and Carlos Abrahams.

Paul has been working as a practical field ecologist for over 22 years, specialising in bat (and later bird) bioacoustics.

Paul currently runs training courses on a range of aspects of bioacoustics all over the world, teaching at a range of different levels from PhD students and researchers to amateur naturalists involved in citizen science projects and school groups. He works in an advisory capacity within the academic and business sectors on improving methods of recording and analysing sound from large data sets, and also assists as an advisor for the BBC and other TV production companies.

Paul’s interest in bioacoustics has now developed into a wide range of sound recording and analysing techniques, including acoustic, ultrasonic and infrasonic sound.

Carlos is the Director of Bioacoustics at Baker Consultants, a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, and vice-chair on CIEEMs Training Education and Career Development Committee. He has worked in consultancy for 20 years, following previous roles in countryside management. He publishes research in bioacoustics and freshwater ecology, and is keen on the development of fieldwork techniques and monitoring approaches.
