Patterns of Bat Activity at Upland Windfarms: Implications for Sampling and Mitigation

Peter Robson, who will be presenting this webinar, has been head of onshore ecology at ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) for 10 years with responsibility for implementing monitoring, research and land management at over 30 onshore windfarms across the UK. Has led research into understanding patterns of bat activity at SPR’s portfolio of onshore windfarms since 2015 and was a contributing author of the 2019 joint agency guidance “Bats and Onshore Wind Turbines: Survey, Assessment and Mitigation”.

This webinar will show a presentation of 4 years of spatially and temporally intensive bat activity monitoring data undertaken at 10 operational windfarms in Scotland, along with an exposition of patterns relating to weather conditions. The implications of these patterns for curtailment mitigation and monitoring (sampling) strategies are discussed along with real world examples to highlight how innate temporal variability of bat activity in the uplands can dramatically alter results and interpretation.
