Undertaking Dusk/Dawn Bat Roost Surveys

A one day, one dusk and one dawn training course which will show delegates how to plan and undertake dusk and dawn bat roost surveys effectively. The course will focus on buildings, not trees.

Delegates should bring a bat detector and earphones, a pencil, paper and a clipboard.

The course will cover:
- Bat surveying guidelines and their significance
- Scoping sites
- Defining the task
- Deciding on equipment/staff numbers/positioning
- Conducting vigils
- What survey information to record and how best to do so
- Considering examples of good and bad practice
- Considering limitations and ways to offset them

Combining presentations, group discussions, sub-group tasks and fieldwork, this course will involve a post-dusk survey and pre-dawn survey on the same night (meaning only about 4.5 hours sleep).

Camping space is available on-site - please contact the trainer directly.

We recommend that delegates keep the Tuesday and Thursday nights free because if the weather for the Wednesday seems likely to be particularly bad we will consider changing the date.
