Biodiversity Net Gain: An update on legislation and experience on large scale projects

This webinar will be presented by Claire Wansbury and Nick White. Nick works across Government (national and local), and with developers, NGOs and academia to advance policy, practice and standards around net gain (biodiversity, natural capital and environmental). The current focus of his work is on biodiversity net gain legislation, the biodiversity metric and biodiversity net gain standards and guidance He is also working on the evolving approach to marine net gain. He is interested in how biodiversity and the natural environment can contribute towards wider social and economic benefits. He has a strong interest in green infrastructure, especially in relation to urban areas and its ability to enhance wider (grey) infrastructure resilience.

Claire is an award-winning ecologist with thirty years’ experience and a Fellow of CIEEM and the Linnean Society. Claire is one of the UK’s top experts on new approaches to valuing and restoring nature, including biodiversity net gain and natural capital. Over the last decade, Claire has been involved in trialling BNG metrics and championing good practice. Claire also has particular knowledge of ecological mitigation and creating biodiversity opportunities in infrastructure development schemes.

Nick White will share an overview of the approach of BNG, and the latest updates on progress with consultations and other work to create the secondary legislation, and underpinning tools and processes, that will make BNG mandatory across most development projects in England. Claire Wansbury will share practical experience of the BNG approach on East West Rail 2, the first scheme of its scale where a voluntary commitment was made to deliver 10% BNG
