Approaches to Addressing the Climate Emergency in the Overseas Territories

Summary

Many of the UK Overseas Territories are on the front line of climate change impacts, including sea level rise, increased storm frequency and intensity, coral reef degradation and melting ice sheets. The CIEEM Overseas Territories Special Interest Group (OTSIG) and Action 2030 Group have teamed up to deliver a webinar on approaches to addressing the climate emergency in the Overseas Territories to support both the local communities and the vast biodiversity present.

This webinar will highlight the context of the climate emergency in the Overseas Territories and how CIEEM is working to address it as an Institute. Dr Louise Soanes, University of Roehampton, will then demonstrate approaches that can be implemented in the Overseas Territories, focusing on a case study of reducing the vulnerability of coastal communities in the British Virgin Islands through sustainable mangrove management.

Description

This webinar will be hosted by Katie Medcalf and Amber Connett. Katie is the Convenor of CIEEM’s Overseas Territories Special Interest Group Committee. Members of the UK Overseas Territories SIG volunteer their time to support members working in this area through providing opportunities to network, share skills and learn more about the profession.

Amber is CIEEM’s Policy and Communications Officer. She is coordinating the Action 2030 group to help to deliver CIEEM’s actions on the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. Contact Amber at: AmberConnett@cieem.net.
