Floodplain Meadows - monitoring, and factors affecting plant communities

The course will cover factors affecting floodplain meadow plant communities and how communities respond to these, such as hydrology and flooding, soils and nutrient loading; monitoring techniques for environmental factors including dipwells; an overview of habitat management (grassland, water management); an overview of the recent reclassification of floodplain plant communities.

The course will cover factors affecting floodplain meadow plant communities and how communities respond to these, such as hydrology and flooding, soils and nutrient loading; monitoring techniques for environmental factors including dipwells; an overview of habitat management (grassland, water management); an overview of the recent reclassification of floodplain plant communities.

There will NOT be an opportunity for identification of plants or their communities; the day will include a site visit. Examples will be drawn from sites monitored by the course leaders and by the Floodplain Meadows Partnership.

Please bring clean boots (wellies preferable) for the field visit.

Knowledge Level

Beginner - Intermediate

Prior Knowledge

None required, but attendees with knowledge of floodplain NVC communities will gain more from the day.

Learning Outcomes

  • Be able to understand the links between soils, hydrology, nutrient loading and floodplain plant communities.
  • Know the principles of meadow and hydrology management and the principles on how to address site management issues.
  • Have a broad understanding of how plant communities change in response to flooding and drought.
  • Know how to monitor hydrology and soil nutrients using dipwells and sediment mats.
  • Know where to find more resources.
