Raised Mire restoration

Summary

Woolden & Cadishead Mosses are part of the larger Chat Moss restoration project masterminded by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust (check outhttps://www.lancswt.org.uk/chat-moss-project before you visit). We will be visiting these two sites to see different stages of restoration on different peat depths using different rewetting methods plus plant introductions.

Description

Little Woolden and Cadishead Mosses sit across from each other and have the potential to create one big mossland corridor. We will start by visiting Little Woolden Moss which is healing slowly as drainage ditches are blocked and the peat surface levelled. This site is in different stages of restoration which we can see with cell and contour bunding and planting of Eriophorum & lawn Spagna. We will then visit Cadishead Moss bought by the LWT in 2007, formerly a cut-over peat bog, which has now been rewetted. The re-establishment of the M2/M18 bog communities will be examined in the diverse mix of deep and shallow pools which used the ditches and bunds left from peat extraction. Snipe are thriving here and mosses re-colonising. The LWT is also improving access and working with local communities this project.

Lancashire Wildlife Trust have masterminded the Chat Moss restoration project in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University. The leader (probably Jamie Lawson) will introduce themselves at the meeting on site.
