QGIS is a freely available open-source GIS that matches the functionality and usability of commercial products like MapInfo and ArcGIS. It has been adopted by governments, businesses and NGOs around the world.

The course is suitable for beginners to GIS, those looking to refresh their skills or migrate to QGIS software. It will help ecological consultants, conservation officers, and recent graduates visualise, explore and analyse spatial data.

Practical exercises will ensure that attendees gain hands-on experience and have the skills needed to confidently implement GIS projects in the workplace. Topics will cover:

• GIS fundamentals; data management, licensing and map design
• Navigating the QGIS user-interface
• Obtaining and integrating (base) map data
• Creating your own GIS data to represent habitats, species and other features on a map, and adding colours and symbols
• Performing basic spatial analysis to create species lists for sites
• Producing professional Phase 1 PDF habitat maps for reports
• Using the FSC Tom.bio Plug-in to create species distribution maps
• Geo-reference a raster image to capture data from a field map

No prior knowledge of GIS is required, but participants should be comfortable working with computers, managing files and installing software. Attendees will need to bring a laptop with QGIS installed, and a mouse.
