Summary

We are excited to invite submissions for our upcoming conference Source to Sea: Working Across Landscapes. This conference will explore the interconnectedness of lochs, rivers, oceans and their contributing watersheds/catchments, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches to managing these ecosystems holistically. The Scottish Biodiversity Strategy has set an ambitious goal for Scotland to become Nature Positive by 2030 and to have restored and regenerated biodiversity by 2045. Achieving this vision requires a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach to address the environmental challenges ahead. How do we broaden the scope of existing management frameworks to work beyond traditional, independent management of land, rivers and marine ecosystems.

Description

This conference aims to explore strategies, practices, and case studies that bridge working across landscapes, ensuring better ecological outcomes and the long-term health and resilience of interconnected ecosystems.

We invite presentation, poster and workshop proposals addressing the following themes:

1. Examples of strategic landscape and catchment-scale solutions.

This session will highlight the growing importance of strategic action, including implementing nature networks, strategic partnerships and nature-based solutions (NbS), to ensure ecological connectivity across landscapes, support biodiversity, resilience, and ecosystem services and address environmental challenges like flood management, habitat restoration, and climate change resilience. We seek case studies that demonstrate:

Practical examples of implementing nature networks across landscapes, including approaches to incentivize connectivity and integrate connectivity into ecological assessments.

Practical examples of strategic nature-based solutions to address key pressures and impacts across freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems within a catchment context.

Partnerships at the catchment scale that lead to successful ecological outcomes.

Planning and prioritising habitat management and restoration in response to INNS and climate change to build resilience.

Collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate biodiversity restoration and regeneration.

2. Integrating terrestrial, freshwater and marine planning.

This session will explore how integrated planning across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments can meet shared ecological goals. Topics of interest include:

Effective coordination between terrestrial, freshwater and marine planning and policies to support nature-based solutions.

Building the skills and partnerships necessary to implement source to sea approaches.

Ensuring integrated land and water management is the foundation of ecological resilience.

3. Nature finance and natural capital accounting.

This session will explore emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in nature finance and natural capital accounting, with practical lessons from case studies integrating finance into biodiversity restoration and conservation across freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

Practical examples of how private and blended finance models can support investments in catchment-scale projects.

Emerging nature finance mechanisms and nature markets for water-related ecosystems, including the development of water metrics and standards for measuring water-related ecosystem services.

Practical examples of private and blended finance models to incentivize nature-positive projects, including land use change and compensation for farmers and land managers delivering ecosystem services, such as floodplain restoration.

Call for Papers - Submission Guidelines

The Call for Papers for this conference is now open.

Presentations will be 20 minutes in duration plus five minutes for questions. Workshops will be 45-60 minutes in duration.

Abstracts (summary of proposed presentation or workshop) should be no more than 300 words and include a clear title, description of the proposed presentation or workshop, and relevance to the above conference themes.

Please submit your response to our Call for Papers by 8th May using this form.

Posters

Posters will be on display throughout the event and there will be a dedicated poster session for you to share your work.

If you would like to display a poster at the conference, please submit your response by 1st July using this form.

If you are selected to share your work, please note that you will need to book a place on the conference.
