Leading with the landscape to secure ecosystem services:The new South Downs National Park Local Plan

An opportunity for ecologists and environmental managers to get to know the South Downs National Park, its landscapes and new policies that promote a landscape-led approach, securing ecosystem services and biodiversity net gains. This event is being organised jointly between CIEEM South East Section Committee and South Downs National Park Authority.

Speaker: Ruth Childs, Landscape Officer for the South Downs National Park

An afternoon workshop event which will focus on two new and challenging policies within the National Park’s new Local Plan: the Design policy which requires a landscape-led approach and the Ecosystem Services policy which requires applicants to secure benefits for people and wildlife through retaining and enhancing functioning ecosystems. Both policies relate to ecology. We will discuss how these policies can be met and contribute positively to the National Park’s first purpose to conserve and enhance natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage, whilst helping to shape the landscape-led approach and achieve net gains for biodiversity. This event will provide an opportunity to learn about the new Local Plan, its policies, aspirations of the SDNPA and how ecologists and land managers can ensure projects are policy compliant and deliver for biodiversity.

This partnership event will be attended by representatives from the SNDPA and will be open to ecological consultants, local authority ecologists and environmental managers, as well as planner and landscape architects with an interest in a holistic approach to landscape design.

This event is open to both CIEEM members and non members.  CIEEM Student members can attend for free.  However, advance booking is required for all tickets, as space is limited.
